Install LEDs or Strobe Tubes in a Double-Walled Headlight

Install LEDs or Strobe Tubes in a Double-Walled Headlight

Double-walled headlights, common in many modern vehicles, present unique challenges when installing hideaway LEDs or strobe tubes. This guide outlines the process to ensure a secure and effective installation.

1. Understanding Double-Walled Headlights

Double-walled headlights consist of an outer lens and an inner reflector housing, creating a sealed environment. This design enhances light projection and protects internal components but complicates aftermarket installations.

2. Tools and Materials Needed

  • Drill with appropriate hole saw bits (typically 1" for strobe tubes)
  • Deburring tool or sandpaper
  • Vacuum or compressed air
  • Strobe tubes or LED modules
  • Double Wall Headlight Adhesive Sealant
  • Screwdrivers and mounting hardware
  • Protective gloves and safety glasses

3. Preparation

  • Safety First: Disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Access the Headlight Assembly: Remove the headlight unit from the vehicle, following the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Drilling the Outer Wall

  • Mark the Location: Identify a suitable spot on the outer wall, ensuring it aligns with the desired position on the inner reflector.
  • Drill the Outer Hole: Use a hole saw to create an opening in the outer wall. This hole should be large enough to allow access to the inner reflector.

5. Drilling the Inner Reflector

  • Align and Mark: Through the outer hole, mark the corresponding spot on the inner reflector.
  • Drill the Inner Hole: Carefully drill into the inner reflector, creating a hole that matches the size of your strobe tube or LED module.

6. Cleaning Debris

  • Remove Shavings: Use a vacuum or compressed air to eliminate any plastic shavings or debris from the headlight assembly.
  • Inspect the Area: Ensure the drilled holes are clean and smooth to facilitate proper sealing.

7. Installing the Light Module

  • Insert the Module: Place the strobe tube or LED module into the inner reflector hole, ensuring a snug fit.
  • Secure the Module: Depending on the design, use mounting hardware or adhesive to secure the module in place.

8. Sealing the Outer Wall

  • Apply Adhesive Sealant: Use the Double Wall Headlight Adhesive Sealant to cover the outer hole. This sealant is designed to bond effectively with headlight materials, providing a durable and weather-resistant seal.
  • Allow to Cure: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for curing time to ensure a secure seal.

9. Reinstallation

  • Reconnect the Headlight: Place the headlight assembly back into the vehicle, securing it according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
  • Reconnect the Battery: Restore power to the vehicle and test the newly installed lights for proper operation.
